There's only a small and exclusive band of people who've had their names adopted as cockney rhyming slang. Former trade union leader Jack Jones, who died yesterday at the age of 96, was a member of this elite group.
Now that he's gone, we're truly on our Jack Jones.

Since posting about Jack Jones, I've discovered that this particular piece of slang may predate the veteran union leader and relate to a now-forgotten character from a music hall or variety song. Just goes to show that even Washed and Ready to Eat can get things wrong sometimes. Apologies to my loyal readers. PW
